G2E 2025: Panelists discuss providing safe space for whistleblowers in gaming compliance

Key Points
- Whether through direct conversations with human resources or hotline calls, panelists said they value creating an environment where employees can reach out with problems or issues
- Speakers emphasized the need to handle issues and investigations in a timely manner
A group of panelists recently spoke on cultivating a speak-up culture within gaming companies as part of last week’s G2E 2025 educational sessions in Las Vegas.
Those who participated at the session included Great Canadian Entertainment General Counsel and Chief Administrative Officer Katie Lever, Ainsworth Game Technology General Counsel & Group Compliance Officer Nancy Ramirez Ayala, Resorts World Catskills VP of Compliance Sandie Barrera and Mohegan Chief Compliance Officer Marc Comella.
“This is a topic that is very close to my heart,” said Lever. “I have been in gaming for 25+ years. Whistleblowing, speak up culture is really the foundation of all of the organizations that we engage. Whether you’re on the supplier side, the operator side, whether you’re in-house or outhouse, it is also incredibly important that you use the tools, the philosophies, in order to live.”
The panelists discussed several key issues around whistleblowing and report incidents, including making sure people feel safe when coming to management and following “no retaliation” policies.
Making sure workers understand what they report to human resources, and to their managers will remain confidential was also a major part of the session’s discussion.
According to the panelists, part of ensuring confidentiality and safe reporting procedures is implementing bypass features that would exclude compliance professionals from seeing reports that could be filed about them.
Another aspect is citing policies when responding to questions and concerns, as well as handling reports and investigations in a timely manner.
All speakers agreed that additional and ongoing training was important to building and maintaining a speak-up culture in the workplace. This includes training for managers on how to speak to each other, as well as employees, and training on soft skills and communication.
