How We Rate

Every gambling site we review gets the same treatment: we sign up, deposit real money, and test the platform before we write a word. Our team combines decades of experience across the US gambling industry, from regulated sportsbooks and licensed online casinos to poker rooms and sweepstakes sites, so we know what good looks like and we know when a site is cutting corners. What you’ll find on Gaming America isn’t a list of sites that paid to be here. Every rating reflects real testing across six categories: games and software, safety and security, bonuses, payments, mobile experience, and customer support. The good and the bad.

Our Rating Process

Every site we review is scored against six categories, each weighted to reflect how much it actually affects your experience. No single factor dominates: a site with a great game library but slow payouts and poor support isn’t a site we’d recommend, and the scores reflect that. Here’s how the weighting breaks down:

  • 20% Games & Software
  • 20% Safety & Security
  • 15% Bonuses
  • 15% Payments
  • 15% Mobile
  • 15% Customer Support

1 Games & Software

We don’t skim game libraries, we play them. Every site we review gets real-money wagers placed across casino games, betting markets, and poker before we form a view on it. If a game runs poorly, pays below its stated RTP, or a sportsbook’s live odds freeze at the wrong moment, that goes into the rating.

Games & Software

Game Variety

Slot count means nothing on its own. What we’re looking for is genuine range: slots, table games, live dealer, and specialty formats from studios whose math has been independently verified. We check RTP figures for every major title and expect the site to display them openly. If you have to dig for a game’s RTP, that’s usually a deliberate choice on the site’s part.

Demo play availability factors in, too. Being able to try a game before you stake real money is a basic courtesy, and sites that lock everything behind a deposit tell you something about how they view the relationship.

Market Coverage

Every sportsbook covers the NFL, NBA, and MLB: that’s not a differentiator. What we look for is depth: alternative lines, player props, same-game parlays, and genuine coverage of sports outside the major four. College sports, combat sports, and niche markets like darts or esports separate a serious book from a basic one.

Market depth within a single game matters just as much as the number of sports on offer. Hundreds of options on one NFL game tells you the book is built for serious betting. A handful of moneylines and nothing else tells you the opposite.

Poker Games & Tournaments

Poker is the one category where the site itself is almost secondary to who’s playing on it: a slick interface with empty tables is worthless. We check peak and off-peak traffic across cash games and tournaments: a site that looks busy on a Saturday night can be a ghost town on a Tuesday afternoon, and that matters if you play regularly.

Format coverage matters too. We look for No-Limit Hold’em, Pot-Limit Omaha, MTTs, Sit & Gos, and fast-fold options across a range of stakes. Micro and low-stakes tables are essential for anyone building their game. High-stakes availability tells you whether the site can hold serious action. We check both ends.

Software

The studios behind the games matter because they directly affect your experience. We look for titles from proven providers (think NetEnt, Evolution, Pragmatic Play, IGT, and Playtech) because games from audited, reputable developers load faster, crash less, and pay out according to verified odds. A library padded with titles from unknown studios is worth knowing about before you deposit.

On the platform side, we assess the sportsbook and poker software separately. For sportsbooks, that means odds refresh speeds, in-play stability, and how the interface holds up under pressure. For poker, it’s client stability, hand history access, and whether the software gives you a fair environment to play in if you’re a recreational player.

2 Safety & Security

A site that isn’t safe isn’t worth reviewing. Before we look at games, bonuses, or anything else, we verify that every site we recommend meets a baseline standard for licensing, fair play, and player protection. If it doesn’t clear that bar, it doesn’t make our list.

Safety & Security

Licensing

A valid license from a recognized regulatory authority is the first thing we check. We look for regulation from bodies like the Malta Gaming Authority, the Curacao Gaming Control Board, and other recognized and reputable regulators. A license isn’t just a badge: it means the site is accountable to an independent authority that can investigate complaints and enforce standards.

Fair Play/RNG Testing

RNG stands for Random Number Generator: it’s the system that determines game outcomes, and independent testing is the only way to confirm it’s working as advertised. We check that every site’s games carry certification from recognized testing labs like eCOGRA, GLI, or BMM Testlabs. No certification means no recommendation.

Certification isn’t a one-time event, either. Labs conduct ongoing audits, and we look for sites that maintain current certifications rather than displaying credentials from a test conducted years ago. If a site’s fair play credentials haven’t been updated recently, that’s worth flagging.

Player Protection

Every site we recommend must meet a minimum standard for account security. That means SSL encryption across the entire platform, two-factor authentication availability, and clear procedures for flagging and resolving unauthorized account activity. These aren’t premium features: they’re the baseline.

We also check how sites handle disputes. A clear, accessible complaints process and a track record of resolving issues in good faith matters. A site that makes it difficult to escalate a legitimate complaint is one you don’t want to be locked into when something goes wrong.

Responsible Gambling

Every site we recommend must offer responsible gambling tools: deposit limits, session reminders, cooling-off periods, and self-exclusion at a minimum. We check how easy these are to find and activate. Tools buried three menus deep don’t count.

Accessibility is as important as availability. If setting a deposit limit requires a support ticket and a 48-hour wait, it isn’t functioning as a protective measure. We test the process end to end, not just confirm the tools exist on paper.

3 Bonuses

We verify every bonus we write about: that means reading the full terms, fulfilling wagering requirements where possible, and checking whether what’s advertised holds up against what’s actually delivered. The headline number is almost never the figure that matters.

Bonuses

Bonus Variety

A strong bonus offering goes beyond the welcome package. We look for sites that reward you across your first several deposits, not just the first one, and that maintain an ongoing promotional calendar: reload bonuses, free spins, cashback offers, and event-tied promotions that give you a reason to stay engaged after sign-up.

Loyalty programs factor in here, too. A site with a well-structured VIP or rewards program that returns real value on consistent play ranks higher than one that throws everything at the welcome bonus and goes quiet after that.

Wagering Requirements

Wagering Requirements determine how much of a bonus’s stated value you can actually access. A 200% match bonus with a 40x wagering requirement means if you deposit $100, you need to wager $6,000 before you can withdraw a cent. We calculate the realistic value of every offer rather than taking the headline figure at face value.

We also look at how wagering requirements compare across similar sites. A 10x requirement on a deposit bonus is genuinely favorable. Anything above 35x starts eating into the offer’s value, and we call these out when we see them.

Bonus Transparency/Terms

The details that matter most are usually the ones hardest to find. Max bet restrictions during bonus play, cashout caps on winnings, expiry windows, and game restrictions all affect what a bonus is actually worth, and sites don’t always display them prominently. We pull every relevant condition before forming a view.

We also flag sticky bonus structures, where the bonus amount itself can never be withdrawn, only winnings generated from it. It’s a setup that cuts the real value of an offer significantly, and sites don’t always make it obvious. If it’s there, you’ll find it in our review.

Eligible Games

Not every game contributes equally to wagering requirements, and some titles are excluded entirely. Slots typically contribute 100%, while table games and live dealer often contribute far less: sometimes as little as 5% or 10%. Playing the wrong games during bonus play can mean you never realistically clear the requirement.

We check contribution rates across game categories for every bonus we review and flag any titles that are excluded outright. If the eligible game list is so narrow it effectively forces you into a single slot, that’s part of the rating.

4 Payments

We make real-money deposits and withdrawals using every available payment method on every site we review. We’re not checking whether a method is listed on the banking page: we’re checking whether it actually works, how long it takes, and whether anything unexpected comes up along the way.

Payments

Payment Options

A solid payment suite covers the methods most used in the US. We look for credit and debit cards, ACH/eCheck, PayPal, Play+, and wire transfer as the fiat baseline, plus cryptocurrency support: Bitcoin at minimum, with broader crypto options as a differentiator. The more payment method variety a site offers, the more likely you are to find something that works for your situation.

We also check whether your preferred deposit method works for withdrawals, too. Plenty of sites accept Visa for deposits, but won’t process a payout back to the same card. That’s the kind of detail that catches you off guard, and we flag it upfront.

Deposit/Withdrawal Processes

We test the full journey for every method, from putting down a deposit to completing a withdrawal, checking for ease of use, clarity of instructions, and any documentation requirements that aren’t flagged upfront. A site that springs a verification request on you mid-withdrawal, after you’ve already been playing for weeks, is one we note.

We also check whether the process is consistent across desktop and mobile. A payment flow that works cleanly on a desktop but breaks down on a phone screen is a real-world problem for anyone who manages their account on mobile.

Payout Speed

Speed varies significantly by method, and we give you realistic timeframes based on what we actually experienced rather than what the site’s FAQ claims. eWallets and crypto are typically the fastest: PayPal withdrawals on well-run sites generally land within 24 hours, and Bitcoin payouts can clear in under an hour when the site processes promptly. ACH and bank transfers sit at the other end, typically taking three to five business days.

Pending periods matter as well. Some sites hold withdrawals in queue for 24 to 48 hours before processing even begins. We factor that into the total timeframe rather than quoting only the transfer time.

Fees & Limits

We check for fees at both ends: what the site charges and what your payment processor may add on top. Most reputable sites absorb transaction fees on their end, but that’s not universal, and a fee you weren’t expecting on a withdrawal is an unpleasant surprise. We flag any site that passes costs onto you without making it obvious upfront.

Limits matter just as much. A low maximum withdrawal limit forces you to request multiple payouts to access a significant win, which adds time and frustration. We check minimums and maximums across every method and flag anything that falls outside of what you’d reasonably expect.

5 Mobile

We test every site across both desktop and mobile as standard, and a poor mobile experience costs points regardless of how strong the rest of the offering is.

Mobile

Small Screen Optimization

A site that works on desktop but falls apart on a phone screen isn’t built for how most of us actually use it. We look for responsive design that adapts cleanly to smaller screens: readable text, logical navigation, and touch-friendly controls that don’t require pinching and zooming to hit the right button. A cluttered layout that made sense at 1080p doesn’t get a pass just because it technically loads on mobile.

Game rendering matters just as much. Slots and live dealer tables need to display correctly on smaller screens without cutting off controls or distorting the interface. If a game is listed in the mobile library but barely playable on a phone, we say so.

Mobile App

Most sites now deliver their mobile experience through a browser rather than a dedicated app, and a well-built mobile site is often just as good. For sites that do offer a dedicated app, we download it, test it across iOS and Android where available, and assess it on stability, ease of navigation, and feature parity with the desktop version.

An app that covers deposits and withdrawals but locks you out of live dealer or in-play betting isn’t a full mobile experience. We check what’s available in the app versus what requires a desktop visit, and flag any meaningful gaps.

Game Availability

A mobile library that covers only a fraction of what’s available on desktop is a real limitation. We check that the majority of the game catalog, including live dealer titles, carries across to mobile without significant drop-off. Live dealer in particular can be poorly optimized for smaller screens, and we test it directly rather than assuming it works because it’s listed.

We also check load times and stability under normal mobile network conditions. A game that runs cleanly on Wi-Fi but stutters on a 4G connection isn’t truly mobile-ready, and that’s how most of us will be playing away from home.

Banking on Mobile

Mobile banking has its own considerations beyond what we cover in the payments section. We check whether the full range of payment options is accessible from a mobile browser or app: some sites quietly limit which methods are available on mobile without flagging it clearly.

We also look at mobile-specific payment options where they’re available. Apple Pay and Google Pay are genuinely useful on mobile when a site supports them well: one-tap deposits without entering card details every time is a real convenience. If a site supports them, we test them: if it doesn’t, we note it.

6 Customer Support

A site that’s hard to reach when something goes wrong is a site you don’t want to be locked into. We contact support on every site we review, not to ask an easy question, and we weigh the results accordingly.

Customer Support

Availability

We look for 24/7 live chat as the baseline. Email support comes alongside it as standard, and phone support is a differentiator worth noting when it’s available. A site that offers live chat only during business hours, or that funnels every query into a ticket system with no real-time option, falls short of what a serious gambling site should offer.

We also check language availability for US-based support. English-only is fine for most users, but a site serving a broad US audience that can’t handle Spanish-language queries is leaving a significant portion of its customer base without adequate help.

Response Times

We test every available channel at multiple times, including peak hours, to get a realistic picture of wait times rather than a best-case scenario. Live chat response times under two minutes are the standard we’d expect from a well-run site. Anything consistently above five minutes during normal hours is a problem we flag.

Email response times vary more widely, but 24 hours is the ceiling we hold most sites to. A site that takes three days to respond to an email query and offers no live alternative isn’t meeting a basic standard of care, regardless of how good the response eventually is.

Quality of Support

Response time means nothing if the answer doesn’t help. We evaluate every interaction for accuracy, clarity, and whether the agent actually resolved the issue rather than deflecting it. A support team that can answer a specific question about withdrawal processing times or bonus terms without escalating to a supervisor or sending a boilerplate response rates higher.

We also note how agents handle edge cases: account disputes, bonus discrepancies, and technical issues. These are the moments that reveal whether a support team is genuinely empowered to help or just there to manage volume. The difference is obvious when you test it directly.

Ease of Access

Support should be available without an account, and we check that upfront. A site that hides its contact options behind a login wall is making a deliberate choice to limit your ability to get help, and that’s reflected in our rating.

We also check whether support is fully accessible on mobile. Live chat that works on desktop but doesn’t load correctly on a phone browser is a real gap, particularly given how many people manage their accounts on mobile. If you can’t reach support from the device you’re most frequently using, that counts.

Why Trust Us

Gaming America covers the US gambling market and nothing else. Our team has spent years tracking how this industry operates state by state: which regulators enforce standards, which sites cut corners, and where the market is heading. That focus is what separates a genuine recommendation from a generic one.
