New York mobile sports wagering handle hits $1.43bn in August

Figures released by the New York Gaming Commission have revealed that players in the state wagered a total of $1.43bn on sports in August 2024, up 25% year-over-year from the $1.11bn registered in August 2023.  

In addition, gross gaming revenue (GGR) generated by players in the state totaled $125m in the month of August – up 24% year-over-year from the $98m generated in August last year. This latest figure brings the total GGR figure in the state of New York so far up to $786.3m. Similarly, the mobile sports wagering handle figures from August this year bring the total figure for 2024 so far up to $8.1bn.  

Net revenue for platform providers in the state reached a figure of $61.2m in August this year, compared to a figure of $48.2m last year. The Gaming Commission has also detailed that $6m of net revenue dedicated for education purposes will be distributed towards initiatives relating to problem gambling treatment and education – whereas $5m will be dedicated to youth sports programs.  

Figures from July 2024 indicated that a lower figure of $1.26bn was wagered by players in the state. However, $140.3m in GGR was generated for July – 11.5% higher than the latest figures in August. New York’s highest figures of the year so far came from May, wherein the state saw figures of $1.97bn and $203m for wagering handle and GGR respectively.  

In May, Scientific Games extended its long-standing agreement with the New York Lottery for the provision of consumer & product research and data analytics.

More recently, BetMGM launched a new blackjack dealer event in partnership with the New York Jets.
