Hard Rock Bet Launches in Ontario, Marking the Brand’s First International Expansion

Hard Rock Digital launched Hard Rock Bet in Ontario on Wednesday, bringing its mobile sportsbook and online casino platform to Canada’s largest regulated iGaming market.
This marks Hard Rock Digital’s first expansion outside the United States. Ontario players can now download the Hard Rock Bet app on Apple and Android devices or access the platform through its desktop site, with a catalog of more than 3,000 casino games alongside a full sportsbook offering parlay wagering across major sports.
The launch follows last year’s opening of the $350 million Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Ottawa, which has established itself as one of the province’s leading land-based properties since opening. That physical presence gave Hard Rock a meaningful advantage that most Ontario iGaming operators lack: a local brand footprint and a loyalty program players can use both online and in person. Ontario bettors will have access to the company’s rewards system and can redeem Unity Points across both the Hard Rock Bet platform and the Ottawa casino property.
“With the launch of Hard Rock Bet, we can now stay connected with our guests and players wherever they are, on property or off,” said Christine Crump, president of Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Ottawa.
Ontario First is Paying Off For Hard Rock Digital
Ontario is the only Canadian province with a fully competitive, privately licensed iGaming market. The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario has registered 44 operators across 76 websites, creating one of the most competitive regulated online gambling environments in North America. The province’s combination of regulatory clarity, population size, and established consumer familiarity with legal online gambling made it the natural entry point for any U.S. operator looking north.
Hard Rock’s Ottawa casino gave the brand something most of its Ontario iGaming competitors cannot claim: an existing, locally recognized physical presence before the digital product launched. The online-to-offline loyalty integration is a differentiation strategy that operators like BetMGM and Caesars have deployed effectively in U.S. markets where they hold both physical casino licenses and online betting licenses. Hard Rock is applying the same model in Canada, and it shows tons of promise.
The launch is also supported by a partnership with Canadian artist Choclair, who remastered the Let’s Ride track for the campaign, reflecting what the company described as a commitment to investing in local talent, local partnerships, and localized customer support. The localization effort goes beyond regulatory compliance. Hard Rock is treating Ontario as a market worth building into rather than simply entering.
Alberta Looks Like the Obvious Next Step in Hard Rock’s Canadian Plans
The Ontario launch raises a question the company has not yet answered publicly. Alberta launched its own competitive iGaming market on July 13, becoming the second Canadian province to open to private operator licensing. Both Caesars and PointsBet acted swiftly to obtain iGaming licenses in Alberta.
Unlike Ontario, which has had its market running for several years and already hosts dozens of registered operators, Alberta represents a ground-floor opportunity in a major Canadian province. Whether Hard Rock Bet pursues an Alberta license as an obvious next step after its Ontario debut remains to be seen, as the company has made no announcement.
Outside Ontario and now Alberta, most Canadian online gambling operates in a grey market through offshore platforms, where consumer protections vary and operator accountability is limited. For an operator with Hard Rock’s brand recognition and loyalty infrastructure, the Canadian provincial licensing framework offers a meaningful advantage over those offshore alternatives: a legal, regulated environment where the brand can operate openly and compete for customers who might otherwise use unlicensed sites.
Hard Rock Bet’s Position in a Crowded Field
Hard Rock Bet is already live in ten U.S. states, including New Jersey, Michigan, Florida, and Indiana. The Ontario launch is its eleventh regulated market and its first outside American borders. The platform competes in Ontario against established operators including FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, and bet365, all of which have been active in the province for several years and have built substantial player bases.
The competitive challenge for a later entrant is always customer acquisition in a market where the major operators have already established habits and loyalty programs. Hard Rock’s physical casino integration provides a retention mechanism that online-only operators cannot replicate. A player who earns points at Hard Rock Bet and redeems them at the Ottawa casino is less likely to defect to a competitor than one whose loyalty program has no physical dimension. This dynamic gives Hard Rock Bet a fighting chance in the battle of customer acquisition, despite the late entrance to the market.
Marlon Goldstein, executive managing director and CEO of Hard Rock Digital, described the Ontario launch as introducing the brand’s premium entertainment experience to an audience outside the U.S. for the first time, with an emphasis on local investment as a core part of the market strategy. Whether that strategy translates into meaningful market share in one of North America’s most competitive regulated iGaming environments will become clearer over the next several quarters.
