Oregon Lottery sports betting revenue hits record $4.1m for November
Oregon’s Lottery Scoreboard sports betting app earned the state a record $4.1m in revenue for November, a 49% increase from the prior month.
Revenue soared despite handle dropping from $29.4m in October to $25m in November. Hold percentage for November was 16.4%.
The Scoreboard app offers Oregon residents the opportunity to place mobile wagers inside state lines. College sports bets, however, are off limits, depriving the state of an even greater pull given that the state is home to two power athletic programs, the Oregon Ducks and the Oregon State Beavers.
Even without college sports offerings, the Beaver State is eager to see improving revenue numbers after a tumultuous roll-out of the Scoreboard app.
Four months after its October 2019 launch, Lottery Director Barry Pack said the app would produce a loss of $5.3m for the first nine months ending on 30 June 2019.
The app was suspended in late March due to a cyberattack on platform developer SBTech.
By then, the coronavirus had sent American sports leagues in shutdown mode, leaving Oregon sports bettors with little to wager on.
Numbers recovered once the NBA season resumed in late July, no doubt buoyed by a playoff run by the home state Portland Trailblazers.
Though Oregon does not have an NFL team, football has powered the way this fall. The gridiron accounted for $14.7m of November wagers, far exceeding second place soccer at $3.8m.
December could provide a bounce in handle as the Portland Trailblazers return late in the month, while regional NFL teams the Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers compete for a playoff position.
