Exclusive: SPGA to consolidate efforts with SGLA

The merge aims to better serve the sweepstakes market, according to an SPGA spokesperson.
The Social and Promotional Games Association (SPGA) is set to consolidate its efforts with the Social Gaming Leadership Alliance (SGLA).
Key Points
- The SPGA is set to merge with the SGLA
- It comes following the unanimous approval of AB 831 in California
The move follows the approval of Assembly Bill 831 (AB 831) in California on September 12, with the Bill now awaiting the Governor’s signature. If approved, it will see a ban on sweepstakes in California.
Good to know: Both the SPGA and SGLA pushed back against AB 831 in the lead-up to the vote
In an exclusive comment to Gaming America, a SPGA spokesperson said, “The SPGA is consolidating its efforts with the SGLA. The category is best served by a clear and consistent voice from one group. We’re proud of what our members have accomplished and look forward to the continued leadership of the SGLA.”
The SPGA launched in September 2024 with the aim of providing stakeholders with information regarding sweepstakes, and to advocate for responsible gaming practices in the unregulated space. Meanwhile, the SGLA was formed in May, with partners including VGW, Playstudios and Yellow Social Interactive, with similar goals to the SPGA.
With the heavy blow of losing California, it seems the two have decided to come together. The newly joint operation will operate under the SGLA name.
The passing of the Bill may have an especially significant impact on Tribal gaming operations. While some Tribal leaders approved, others such as The Sherwood Valley Band of Pomo Indians stated that the ban could be damaging for small Tribes, stating, “Policies such as those proposed in AB 831 restrict emerging digital commerce opportunities that could provide essential supplemental revenue streams, effectively limiting the economic diversification options available to tribes like ours to the advantage of wealthier tribes aligned with powerful gaming interests.”
