IBJR launches BetAlert to identify regulated betting sites in Brazil

The tool verifies whether a betting platform is authorized, as part of a national campaign to combat unregulated operators.
Key Points
- BetAlert lets users instantly check if a betting site is licensed by the federal Government
- Research shows up to half of Brazil’s betting activity still occurs on unregulated platforms, with many bettors unable to identify them
- Authorized sites must use the “.bet.br” domain, apply strict registration and age verification and limit transactions to PIX and debit
The Brazilian Institute of Responsible Gaming (IBJR) has launched BetAlert, an online service that allows users to quickly check whether a betting platform is authorized by the federal Government.
The initiative is part of the “goat in the room” campaign, introduced in September to raise awareness about regulated platforms under the Secretariat of Prizes and Betting, part of the Ministry of Finance.
Users receive an immediate response by entering the web address of any betting site. When a platform is verified as licensed, the tool confirms its authorization by the Federal Government. If the site is unlicensed, it displays a warning. The campaign also includes television, radio, airport displays and digital outreach.
Research conducted by the Locomotiva Institute with 2,000 adult bettors between April and May 2025 provided the basis for an economic study prepared by consultancy LCA. The survey estimated that between 41% and 51% of betting activity in Brazil continues to take place on unregulated platforms.
The same survey highlighted the difficulties consumers face in identifying legal operators. 78% of respondents said they struggle to distinguish legal sites from illegal ones, while 72% stated they cannot always verify compliance.
Almost half reported depositing money on a platform later revealed to be fraudulent or irregular, and 73% said they had used at least one of the illegal platforms mapped in 2025.

Fernando Vieira, Executive President of IBJR, said: “IBJR greatly values the use of tools and technologies that contribute to spreading knowledge about the sector. BetAlert is extremely important, and we hope it will be widely used by bettors and Brazilian society.
“Our goal is to ensure that people have access to all the benefits of regulation, the core of which is the safety of those who bet.”
To guide bettors, IBJR also highlights the main requirements for authorized platforms in Brazil. Licensed operators must use the “.bet.br” domain and adopt strict registration procedures, such as facial recognition and document checks, to block underage access.
They are required to offer spending and time-limit tools, monitor risky behavior and provide self-exclusion options. Transactions are limited to PIX and debit from the registered user’s account, with no credit cards or cryptocurrencies allowed.
Odds tell a story long before the result does. When bettors learn to read that story properly, betting becomes a matter of discipline and value rather than emotion or guesswork.
