The Virginia Council on Problem Gambling (VCPG) has issued an online statement to remind players to “know your limits” when betting on this year’s upcoming Super Bowl.
The match will be between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles. The game is scheduled for February 9.
VCPG President Dr. Carolyn Hawley commented, “Many people are developing problems very quickly due to the onset of sports betting legalization along with the growth in options on mobile devices for sports betting.
“The speed, the repetitive nature, and the rush of adrenaline from betting works with the dopamine neurotransmitters and can accelerate the addictive process.”
She went on to encourage those betting on the game this year to wager responsibly.
Hawley said in closing, “As friends and families join together to participate in one of the biggest sports wagering events of the year, we want to remind people of the risks involved with gambling.
“If you have a friend or loved one who can be tempted to indulge in sports betting, discuss a plan to help them cope with the triggers that can creep up before Super Bowl Sunday. Also, before you place a bet on the big game, know your limits. For those who are experiencing problems, we can help.”
Along with the District of Columbia, 38 states now offer legal sports betting. Mobile sports betting is legal in 30 states.
In other state news, Virginia lawmakers recently tabled action on a bill that would bring legal iGaming to the state.
State legislators instead have opted to “seek more time to assess its potential impact.”
The bill in question is Senate Bill 827, pitched to lawmakers by Senator Mamie Locke. If passed, this would give the Virginia Lottery Board the authority to grant iGaming licenses to casino gaming operators.
