Proposed iGaming bill in Virginia put on hold ‘for further study’

Lawmakers are expected to consider the bill next year.
Key Points
- Should this pass, the Virigina Lottery Board could grant iGaming licenses to operators
- There would be a $1m application fee
- Operators would be taxed 15% on iGaming revenue
Lawmakers in Virginia have decided to table action on a bill that would bring legal iGaming to the state, according to a Virginia Mercury local report.
State legislators instead have opted to “seek more time to assess its potential impact.”
The bill in question is Senate Bill 827, pitched to lawmakers by Senator Mamie Locke. If passed, this would give the Virginia Lottery Board the authority to grant iGaming licenses to casino gaming operators.
Under the terms of the proposal, there would be a $1m application fee for operators, as well as a 15% tax on earnings. Revenue would be distributed to local governments, as well as to the state’s General Fund and the Problem Gambling Treatment and Support Fund.
Good to know: Online gaming is legal in some form in seven US states
According to the local report, Locke recently asked the Senate Subcommittee to hold off on the bill’s discussion due to a “need for additional study.”
She further commented to the Virginia Mercury, “This bill is designed to authorize reputable, regulated companies to offer internet gaming to Virginians within a safe and legal market.
“However, after introducing this bill, we have decided that it requires further study on this issue.”
She said she expects the proposal to be ready for consideration next year.
And some of these have limited forms of online gambling available, such as video poker.
States with legal iGaming access include Pennsylvania, Delaware, Nevada, New Jersey, Rhode Island, West Virginia and Connecticut.
