University of Alberta debuts gaming course

The University of Alberta has launched a new gaming course to Canadian residents within the province, according to a local report in the Edmonton Journal.
The micro-credential course was created from a local gambling study based on research conducted by University of Alberta political-science professor Fiona Nicoll. The university said it “aims to inform about just how much goes into the rapidly growing industry.”
She said she hopes the course “will provide critical information to those regularly dealing with gambling and gaming.”
Nicoll developed the course as the Alberta Gaming Research Institute’s research coordinator.
When local news asked what her motivation was for designing the course, she commented, “I saw the need to bring this to as many people as possible because the transformations that are coming are unprecedented in Canada.
“And in this province, the shift from brick-and-mortar casinos to an iGaming model, where you can gamble at anytime, anywhere, on your device with a good internet connection, is a radical shift, partly because it takes regulation out of the hands of the establishments. It downloads that responsibility onto every player to track their consumption.”
Nicoll went on to note that offering this course to residents will give them easier access to information.
She said in closing, “A lot of academic research is inaccessible for financial reasons. Our project is open access, so people who have university library accounts, for example, can access it.
“But not everybody understands the language of academic research, and very few people can understand what it means for them and their communities.”
