Wichita and Affiliated Tribes to install solar panels at Sugar Creek properties

They hope to save $9m during the next 25 years.
Key Points
- The Tribe received a $3.8m grant from the US Department of Energy
- They also plan to match a fourth of the grant’s total
The Wichita and Affiliated Tribes have engaged in a solar energy project that will include installing rooftop solar panels at the Sugar Creek Casino and Sugar Creek Inn and Suites, according to an NPR news report.
The Tribe will partially fund the Anadarko project through a grant from the US Department of Energy. The grant will provide funding reaching nearly $3.8m, with the Tribe matching close to a quarter of those funds.
Wichita and Affiliated Tribes Treasurer Vanessa Vance shared a tentative date for completing the project.
She commented, “We’d definitely like to have this constructed and in place by next summer.
“Of course, it’s going to depend on the weather and all those other factors that we face in Oklahoma.”

Vance went on to note that adding the solar panels could save the Tribe close to $9m over a 25-year projected life span and said this action could lead to additional energy-saving endeavors.
She said, “Right now, we have no green energy. We’re hoping that this will lead to other alternative energy initiatives for the rest of our operations.
“So, not only is this a good project going to benefit us, it’s going to also benefit our sister Tribes and their community as we look to bring alternative energy into our area.”
The Tribe said adding the panels would create seven temporary jobs and three permanent ones.
The Wichita and Affiliated Tribes said it plans to start installation next week.
