Culinary Union dismisses Virgin Hotels Las Vegas’ latest proposal

Culinary Union Local 226 has responded unfavorably to Virgin Hotels Las Vegas’ “last, best and final offer” following a series of failed negotiations between the two parties, according to a Las Vegas Review-Journal local report.
The union said it does not plan to strike at this time but hopes that negotiations will continue. Virgin Hotels, however, claims that the union “has not agreed to additional meeting dates.”
When presenting its proposal, Virgin Hotels Las Vegas released a statement to reporters, accusing the union of misleading its workers.
The company commented, “We do not believe the union has bargained in good faith. The union has made misleading statements to our team members and to the press about the negotiations and the proposals we have put before them. Despite our best intentions, the union has chosen to engage in ‘take it or leave it’ bargaining.
“Their tactics have made it impossible to negotiate a complete agreement. Their tactics are hurting our team members. Due to this, we have made a last, best and final offer in an effort to reach a fair resolution.”
However, union leaders have called out the casino resort, claiming its latest offer is “a publicity stunt,” according to the local report. Union Secretary-Treasurer Ted Pappageorge further described the offer as a “horrible proposal” during a local news conference.
He told the Review-Journal, “When a company bargains in the press, it means they’re not serious.
“They’re literally the last one and I think they’re looking for special treatment. It’s inappropriate.”
The current contract between Virgin Hotels Las Vegas and the union expired nearly one year ago. Since then, attempts to negotiate a new contract have not gone smoothly.
In response, the culinary union held a two-day strike earlier this month. More than 700 members of the state’s largest labor union left the job site to pressure the resort to give the green light on a five-year contract regarding benefits and wages.
During the last several months, the Culinary Union has successfully negotiated new contracts with other casino resorts throughout Las Vegas, including MGM, Caesars and Wynn.
