Las Vegas culinary union worker strike concludes, negotiations to resume

Local 226 is set to continue talks with Virgin Hotels Las Vegas this week.
Negotiations between Virgin Hotels Las Vegas and Culinary Union Local 226 are scheduled to resume Tuesday, according to a recent Associated Press report.
The Nevada labor union completed its 48-hour strike over the weekend. More than 700 members of the state’s largest labor union recently walked off the job to pressure the resort to give the green light on a five-year contract regarding benefits and wages.
The current contract between the two expired nearly one year ago.
Union secretary-treasurer Ted Pappageorge told the Associated Press that he had hoped the two-day strike over the week “would help expedite a new agreement” with Virgin Hotels Las Vegas.
The local union has reached agreements with other casino resorts throughout Las Vegas during the past several months. Union workers negotiated for nearly seven months with MGM, Caesars and Wynn to reach an agreement on new contracts.
On average, casino workers earn nearly $26 per hour. Workers can expect that average to reach $35 an hour at the end of the five-year contract.
Employees will receive a 10% boost in wages during the first year under the terms of the new agreement. Wage increases will top out at a 32% raise throughout the life of the contract, the local report said. The initial wage increase will be retroactive, going back to June 1.
Under the new MGM contract, the union and its workers must have six months’ notice “before new tech introductions and involvement in picking prototypes and vendors.” Additional training opportunities must be provided for workers affected by the new technology as well.
Another aspect of the contract establishes a $2,000 severance per year of seniority for workers who are laid off because of new tech. The package would also include an additional six months of health and pension benefits.
