The Washington Commanders are expected to open a sports betting lounge inside the stadium.

The Sports Wagering Application Review Commission in Maryland approved an application submitted by Washington Commanders owner Dan Synder for a Class A-1 sports-betting facility at FedEx Field.

Located in Landover, Maryland, FedEx Field is home to the NFL team and is expected to build a sports betting lounge similar to facilities in Capital One Arena and Nationals Park in Washington DC.

The commission's vote to approve the application was unanimous with one abstention.

It's important to note that another application was approved for Chesapeake Gaming, which runs an off-track betting parlor in Boonsboro, Maryland.

Maryland Lottery officials are expected to formally issue the license and will oversee administrative steps as the sportsbook opens.

The Commanders released a statement saying: "Our organization is grateful for the time and effort by the state of Maryland and its leaders to develop a regulatory framework and review our application to operate a retail sportsbook at FedEx Field.

"We endorse the approach taken by leaders across Maryland to invite equitable and diverse participation in the legal sports wagering market, and we are looking forward to revealing more about our plans to stakeholders and fans alike in the weeks ahead."

Last week the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency voted 6-1 to approve Snyder’s license, this was after conducting an investigation into Snyder’s financial background and handling of the team.

The Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency Managing Director of Regulatory Oversight is John Mooney, who was tasked with the investigation.

Mooney commented: "Several noteworthy issues involving the Washington Commanders, formally known as the Washington Football Team and the Washington Redskins, and the owner, Mr. Snyder, were identified.

"During the meeting, the issues involving Mr. Synder and the Washington Commanders were discussed. Staff is unable to substantiate any of the allegations against Mr. Snyder."

The lottery agency concluded that Synder "satisfies the standards for financial stability, integrity and responsibility" for the sports betting application.
