Casino workers to strike in Indianapolis and California over government disputes

Key Points
- Horseshoe Indianapolis employees began their protest on October 17 after the property refused to acknowledge Teamsters Local 135 as their bargaining representative
- An ongoing government shutdown in Indianapolis caused the vote for employees to join Teamsters 135 to be delayed, with a neutral third party proposal rejected by the casino
Following a proposal from Attorney General Rob Bonta which would “effectively ban blackjack-style games and severely limit player-dealer games in California cardrooms,” hundreds of gameroom employees and union members will protest outside of Bonta’s office on October 20.
“The Attorney General’s own Standard Regulatory Impact Assessment (SRIA) finds the proposal could eliminate up to half of all cardroom jobs and revenues – costing more than 5,000 living-wage jobs and millions in local tax revenue that fund police, fire, senior and youth programs in cities like Commerce, Compton, Bell Gardens, Hawaiian Gardens, Gardena and Inglewood,” a media release for the upcoming protest said.
Figures such as Hawaiian Gardens Mayor Dandy De Paula and Compton Mayor Emma Sharif will be in attendance for the protest, as those fighting against Bonta’s proposal plan to submit “thousands of signatures” in opposition.
In related news, Horseshoe Casino Indianapolis employees began striking on October 17 after the property refused to acknowledge the Teamsters Local 135 Union as the employees’ bargaining representative.
Good to know: After passing unopposed through the California Assembly and Senate, anti-sweepstakes Assembly Bill 831 was officially signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom on October 11
An ongoing government shutdown in Indianapolis caused the vote for employees to join Teamsters 135 to be delayed, leading the Union to offer a neutral third party to conduct the vote as planned on October 17, but were rejected by Horseshoe Casino management.
Employees and current Teamsters 135 members have formed a picket line outside the facility, stating they continue to fight for “strong union representation.”
