Brazilian influencer Virgínia Fonseca was called to testify in Senate’s betting inquiry

The Brazilian Senate’s inquiry into the online betting market will hear from influencer Virgínia Fonseca on May 13

As the commission seeks clarification on the role of digital figures in promoting gambling platforms to the public, the most followed digital influencer in Brazil, Virgínia Fonseca, is set to appear before the Senate inquiry into Brazil’s online betting sector on 13 May. As it is a formal summon, not a voluntary invitation, her attendance is mandatory.

The inquiry, known as the Senate’s Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry into betting, is investigating whether there are links between betting platforms in Brazil and illegal activities. 

Fonseca is expected to answer questions from Senators about her involvement in marketing and promoting betting companies. She has a combined social media following of over 90 million users across Instagram and TikTok and has previously posted advertising content for betting platforms.

Senator Soraya Thronicke, the commission’s rapporteur and author of the request, said Fonseca’s appearance is essential to understanding the influence of digital personalities when it comes to online betting numbers increasing in Brazil.

“As one of the largest internet personalities in Brazil, Virgínia plays a central role in promoting brands and services, including online gambling and betting campaigns,” Thronicke said. 

“Over recent years, the influencer has been involved in marketing campaigns for betting operators, leveraging her wide follower base.”
