Key Points
- 98% of workers at Caesars Southern Indiana Hotel & Casino have voted to authorize a strike
- The unrest comes due to a lack of employee benefits being offered as part of new contracts
- Currently, Caesars Southern Indiana Hotel & Casino is one of the most profitable in the state
Strike action at Caesars Southern Indiana Hotel & Casino is seemingly imminent, following 98% of workers voting to authorize a strike following the property’s failure to produce acceptable new workers’ contracts.
Represented by Teamsters Local 89 and Operating Engineers Local 339, the casino’s workers have confirmed that, despite months of ongoing negotiations, Caesars Southern Indiana has not met their expectations pertaining to retirement benefits, alongside other key economic issues. Subsequently, no acceptable new contracts have been issued by the property to its employees, who have today almost unanimously authorized motion to strike.
Speaking on the development, President of Local 89, Avral Thompson, said, “Our members are united and ready to fight for the strongest possible agreement. This vote sends a clear message — we will not back down. If management won’t negotiate in good faith, we’re prepared to take action.”
Indeed, the property is owned by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) – who entered into a lease agreement with Vici Properties for the location in 2021. Indeed, in February, Vici Properties established a new $2.5bn unsecured credit facility in order to replace its now terminated credit facility of similar the same size.
This point was further echoed by Sandra Ramirez, Local 89 member and slot attendant at Caesars Southern Indian Hotel & Casino, who said, “I’ve worked at Caesars for over seven years, and we deserve a contract that values our hard work and dedication. No one wants to strike, but if management keeps disrespecting us at the bargaining table, we’re ready to demand what we’ve earned.”
Good to know: Last year, Caesars Southern Indiana Hotel & Casino generated a revenue figure of $240m for EBCI – making it one of Indiana’s most profitable casino locations
This latest news comes following an additional development that saw new iGaming and casino relocation legislation fail to pass through the Indiana House in February, as the state’s latest bid to fully legalize online gaming fell short.
More recently, legislators in the state re-opened the casino licensing relocation discussion as an amendment to Senate Bill 43 passed in committee by an 11-0 vote.
