Genius Sports & Sportradar sued by Panda Interactive

Panda Interactive has now accused the pair of anti-competitive conduct.
Key Points
- Panda Interactive has sought to expand its case against Genius Sports & Sportradar
- Following accusations of patent infringement in 2023, Panda has now also accused the pair of anti-competitive conduct
Furthering its pre-existing patent infringement lawsuit against the pair, Panda Interactive has now filed additional parallel antitrust claims against Genius Sports and Sportradar, amending its previous complaint against the two.
As part of the latest chapter in an ongoing legal battle, Panda Interactive has announced an amended complaint that builds on its previous patent infringement lawsuit by adding parallel antitrust claims to its list of accusations against the companies.
Indeed, the original lawsuit began in October 2023 with Panda’s accusations that the defendants knowingly infringed on its technology patents – specifically relating to interactive sports streaming and betting technologies. Now, Panda has submitted additional claims that Genius Sports and Sportradar engage in anti-competitive conduct via long-term agreements with major sports leagues across the global market.
Following this latest development that seeks to further the accusations against the technology suppliers, Panda Interactive is seeking a legal intervention that will prevent the two companies from engaging in anti-competitive practices – alongside additional damages.
Commenting on the lawsuit, Kevin April, Panda Interactive CEO, said, “The facts speak for themselves – this action is a necessary response. Many in the industry have raised concerns about how Genius Sports and Sportradar operate, and their strong-arm tactics have coerced the market at the expense of all layers of sport.
“Their unchecked dominance has persisted for far too long. The future of sports betting should be driven by innovation and competition, not control and coercion.”
Good to know: After first partnering in November, Sportradar extended its partnership with MLB in February
Elsewhere, shortly after the initial commencing of legal action back in 2023, Genius Sports received regulatory approval for a temporary gaming licence in the state of Maine. More recently, however, the company posted a Q3 revenue figure of $120.3m – representing an 18% rise in revenue year-over-year.
Andrew Schupak, Panda Interactive’s Chief Strategy Officer, also commented on this recent development, saying, “No company should have its own proprietary technology used against it to reinforce an anti-competitive scheme.
“A fair and open market fosters competition, drives progress, and benefits everyone – sportsbooks, media companies, and consumers alike. This case is about leveling the playing field for everyone.”
Sportradar also provided Gaming America with the following comment: “Like most commercial enterprises, we do not comment on pending litigation matters – even unfounded litigation. That said, we can assure you that we operate our business in compliance with existing laws and regulations. We are confident in our defense of this matter and intend to defend these allegations vigorously.”
