The state reported a tax revenue loss of nearly $0.9m last month.

Key points:

- Football was the sport of choice in the Coastal region

- Northern and central Mississippi players bet the most on parlay cards

The Mississippi Gaming Commission has published its sports betting results for the month of December.

Last month, the state’s sports betting handle reached $56.4. Mississippi players wagered less in December than during the previous month.

Players in the Coastal region placed the largest total wagers in contribution to last month’s overall state handle. The Central region grabbed the second-place spot last month.

In a breakdown of the state’s total sports betting handle from last month, those living in the Coastal region bet nearly $41.3m, while players in the Central and Northern regions wagered $9.9m and $5.2m respectively.

Players in the Northern Mississippi region placed more bets on sports parlay cards than in any other category last month, with total wagers reaching nearly $2.2m.

Parlay was the bet of choice for the state’s central region as well. Players in Central Mississippi bet almost $4.9m on parlay and $2.8m on football last month.

However, Coastal region players wagered the largest amount on football last month. Football bets throughout the Coastal region reached almost $27m, while bettors wagered close to $4.4m on sports parlay cards.

The state reported losing nearly $0.9m in retail sports betting tax revenue during the month of December. During the previous month, taxable revenue reached close to $8m.

Good to know: Retail sports betting has been legal in Mississippi for several years

However, legislative negotiators were not able to advance a final mobile sports betting proposal, which means online sports betting will continue to remain illegal throughout the state.

Earlier in the state’s most recent legislative session, both the Senate and the House passed versions of the state’s Mobile Sports Wagering Act.

But concerns surrounding the fate of Mississippi’s brick-and-mortar casinos kept the bill from further advancement.
