Last month, players walked away with a large portion of the winnings.

Key points:

- Last month’s handle broke $600m

- Players took home $561.9m in winnings in September

- Pro football was the sport of choice during the month

The Colorado Division of Gaming has released its sports betting results for the month of October. The regulator serves as part of the Colorado Department of Revenue (CDOR).

For the past several months, the state has posted sports wagering handles that have surpassed the $500m mark.

Last month was no exception. However, the state’s October sports betting handle managed to blow post the $600m mark as well.

Players wagered $601.2m on sports betting last month.

Online sports betting raked in close to $597.3m of October’s total handle, while retail locations took another more than $3.8m in bets.

Last month proved to be a good month for Colorado sports bettors, who walked away with nearly $561.9m in winnings.

Out of the total winnings, online players scored close to $557.6m, while those betting at retail locations took home almost $4.3m.

More players placed bets on professional football during October than they did on any other sports. Wagers on football last month reached $168.8m.

Other heavy hitters included parlays and basketball, raked in bets totaling $152.6m and $82.4m respectively.

Good to know: Gambling has been legal in Colorado for more than four years

Since the US Supreme Court overturned the national ban on legalized sports betting in 2018, more than 35 states have set up regulated sports wagering markets within their borders.

Last month, sports betting generated more than $39,3m in gross gaming revenue. More than $39.6m from online betting, but retail locations reported a loss of close to $0.4m.

Colorado collected more than $2.4m in taxes from sports betting for the month.
