Poker ambassador Mike Sexton dies aged 72

Mike Sexton, one of poker’s biggest ambassadors, has died at the age of 72.

The former poker player, commentator and businessman, who is also a member of the Poker Hall of Fame, passed away on Sunday 6 September after battling prostate cancer

As a poker player, Sexton won nearly $7m in prize money, and won a World Series of Poker bracelet, as well as a World Poker Tour title in 2016.

He was also a long-time commentator of the World Poker Tour and was the chairman and co-founder of online poker room partypoker.

For his services to poker, Sexton was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2009, becoming the 38th member at the time. He also used his winnings for good causes, donating half of his $1m prize at the 2006 World Series of Poker Tournament of Champions event, to five charities.

Winner of 15 World Series of Poker bracelets, Phil Hellmuth, led the tributes, saying poker wouldn’t be as well regarded if it wasn’t for Sexton, and that he championed poker better than anybody.
