Bookies.com examines the upcoming iGaming market in Ontario
Fifteen sports betting operators have been approved to operate within Ontario with more to come.
On April 4, legalized sports betting will begin in Ontario, Canada, after a change in federal law that approved betting on single games. At the moment, fifteen operators in total will be available at launch.
The operators approved are, PointsBet, BetMGM Ontario, FanDuel Ontario, Unibet, Rush Street Interactive’s BetRivers brand, Coolbet, LottoGo, Fitzdares, Bet365, LeoVegas, WSOP, Rivalry, Royal Panda, theScore and 888.
The licenses are for one to two years for most operators, aside from the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation, which is licensed through 2052.
There are other sportsbook operators that could receive licenses prior to Ontario’s launch day. These are major operators such as DraftKings Ontario, Caesers, Betway, and BallyBet.
To legally place a wager in Ontario, you’ll need to be 19 years of age and physically located within the borders of the province.
Per Bookies.com, Ontario encompasses almost 40 percent of Canada’s total population. On the launch day of April 4, bettors in Ontario will have four NHL games to place wagers on.
The previous law in Ontario was a law allowing only parlays available through Canadian provincial lotteries. However, after the change in federal law, the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario began accepting applications from external vendors.
BetMGM Ontario is the most recent operator to be approved by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario. It received approval on March 22, 2022.
On March 21, 2022, Kambi Group PLC was approved as an online gambling supplier. Kambi went on to assure it would supply day-one services for its partners, including 888, Unibet, and LeoVegas.
