Alabama to introduce legislation seeking gambling legalization

Picking up on a stalled effort from last year, measure could bring a state lottery, a compact with a tribe, and more betting facilities.

Politicians in Alabama are hoping to once again put legislation which would legalize forms of gambling before state voters by next November’s election season. The measures may face an uphill battle as, just last year, similar efforts to bring legalized gambling stalled in the legislature.  

Alabama is one of the few states which takes a notably restrictive stance on gambling. There is not even a state lottery. Still, pari-mutuel betting, bingo, and daily fantasy sports are allowed.  

To make Alabama more permissive in this regard, State Senator Greg Albritton will introduce a proposed constitutional amendment that would bring a state lottery, a compact with the Poarch Band of Creek Indians which could see some tribal casino facilities constructed, as well as an undetermined number of gambling sites.  

Said Senator Alberton, according to the Associated Press: “This simply needs to get off our plate, off the table. We need to deal with this and waiting another year is not going to help us. That would just be revenue thrown aside or thrown away.” 

“My goal,” he went on, “is to find a path to get the votes that we need.” 

Despite whatever determination there may be from proponents of legalization, there are simple matters regarding the electoral calendar that may get in the way. As mentioned, next November is an election year, which means many representatives – instead of discussing the bill in the legislature – will be campaigning, trying to ward off primary challengers. 

Albritton remains optimistic. He believes that, if it can come before the people in a referendum, they will approve the measure.
