Indiana senator celebrates casino land study findings

Key Points
- A bill to move licensing to northeast Indiana died in the state’s previous legislative session
- The land study resulted from the failed bill to move Rising Sun’s casino license to the City of New Haven
Indiana Gaming Commission recently released casino land study results, identifying the Hoosier State’s northeast region as one of the top two areas for possible casino relocation.
Findings were submitted to the State Budget Committee on October 29.
“It’s great to see this study recognize the strong economic potential of northeast Indiana,” said State Sen. Andy Zay, who led the charge for this initiative. “Our region continues to show signs of growth and investment opportunities, and I look forward to continuing my work and reviewing this study to see what possibilities are available to our state and region.”
State Sen. Andy Zay drafted a bill for the land study earlier this year, after a casino license relocation bill failed to pass in the Indiana General Assembly. Senate Bill 293 would have allowed the operator to move its Rising Star casino in Rising Sun, Indiana to the City of New Haven.
“This study builds on my earlier efforts with Senate Bill 293, which would have allowed the relocation of Rising Sun Casino’s license to northeast Indiana,” said Sen. Zay. “I believe the study is a good first step in understanding how a potential casino relocation could strengthen Indiana’s economy while supporting development in areas where there is much room to grow.”
Good to know: Indiana has 13 commercial casinos
The senator said he was pleased with the study’s findings and what this can mean for northeast Indiana.
Zay commented, “It’s great to see this study recognize the strong economic potential of northeast Indiana. Our region continues to show signs of growth and investment opportunities, and I look forward to continuing my work and reviewing this study to see what possibilities are available to our state and region.”
