Three more tribes in Washington state approved for sports betting
The Department of the Interior has approved sports betting compacts for three additional Washington state tribes, bringing the number of Washington tribes approved for sports betting to 12.
The DOI approved the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation, Shoalwater Bay Tribe and Muckleshoot Indian Tribe to begin accepting wagers on Sept. 15, as reported by the News Tribune.
The Cowlitz Tribe, Lummi Nation, the Puyallup Tribe of Indians, the Suquamish Tribe, the Stillaguamish Tribe, the Squaxin Island Tribe, the Spokane Tribe, the Snoqualmie Indian Tribe and the Tulalip Tribes were previously approved for sports betting.
The Snoqualmie Tribe became the first Washington tribe to accept wagers when it opened its sportsbook at Snoqualmie Casino on Sept. 9. Former Seattle SuperSonics star Shawn Kemp made the first legal sports wager at the casino, which is located a half hour west of Seattle.
Washington Gov. Jay Inslee (pictured) signed legislation in March that authorizes sports betting at Class III tribal casinos under revised tribal-state compacts.
Legal sports betting in Washington is currently limited to the premises of tribal casinos.
“Working with our Tribal partners and Tribal Gaming Agencies we negotiated compact amendments, developed new rules and learned the intricacies of operating professional sports books,” Inslee said last week. “Together we built a Sports Wagering Menu that will offer casino customers a wide array of gaming opportunities on sporting events from around the world. Commission staff along with our Tribal partners were able to get all this done in time to meet the goal of being ready for the beginning of the 2021 NFL regular season.”
