Brazil: Interministerial group intends to tackle match-fixing

Key Points
- The interministerial group will operate for six months, extendable for an additional six if required
- SPA, under the Ministry of Finance, will participate alongside the Ministry of Sport and Federal Police
- The initiative aims to strengthen prevention, oversight and credibility in Brazilian sports
The Federal Government of Brazil has launched an interministerial working group to address match-fixing in national sports, a joint effort of the Ministries of Finance, Sport and Justice.
Its purpose is to draft the proposal for the National Policy for Combating Manipulation of Sports Results.
Representing the Ministry of Finance will be the Secretary of Prizes and Betting (SPA), which oversees Brazil’s regulated betting market. SPA Secretary Regis Dudena emphasised the threat posed by match-fixing.
“The risks of manipulation of sports results are a threat to the credibility of sport, as they affect something that is central: unpredictability. Such illegal actions can negatively impact society as a whole, which is why a forum like this is so important,” Dudena said.
Good to know: SPA recently signed a cooperation agreement to strengthen oversight of betting advertising
According to Brazil’s Minister of Sport, André Fufuca, “this measure reinforces that the government understands the urgency of addressing such a complex issue. It is essential to act together at the national level to move in the same direction and confront the manipulation of competitions.”
Giovanni Rocco, Brazil’s National Secretary for Sports Betting and Economic Development of Sport, who will coordinate the group, added that protecting the athletes and the credibility of the competiton are central to the group’s mission.
The group’s first concrete step will be a national technical meeting, which will include the training of 54 Civil and Federal Police delegates. The group will work for six months, with the possibility of a six-month extension.
