Coljuegos hosts regional training to reinforce legal gambling in Medellín

Key Points
- Coljuegos held a training session in Medellín with police, business owners and citizens
- The initiative is part of a broader effort to protect health funds from losses due to illegal gaming
- More than 180 unlicensed gaming devices were confiscated in Antioquia over the past year
Coljuegos, Colombia’s national gambling regulator, hosted its third mesa territorial (or territorial training session) in Medellín, aiming to strengthen legal gaming practices and raise awareness of the risks posed by the unregulated market.
The event drew around 200 participants, including local police, business owners, operators and members of the public.
The training was supported by regional stakeholders such as Red Gana (the gaming and financial services operator), the Governor’s Office of Antioquia, the National Police and the Medellín Lottery.
According to Coljuegos VP of Operations Luis Alfredo Escobar, the sessions are intended to “reach the territories to raise awareness about legal and responsible gambling,” with the overarching goal of safeguarding public funds earmarked for healthcare.
Earlier this year, the regulator signed a pact for legality alongside Red Gana, the Medellín Lottery and the Antioquia Governor’s Office.
That partnership has led to increased enforcement and educational outreach, including the confiscation of more than 180 illegal gambling devices operating across multiple municipalities.
Coljuegos highlighted that illegal gambling undermines the country’s subsidised healthcare system, as revenues from authorised gambling contribute directly to public health funding.

“We’re committed to supporting Coljuegos both through educational campaigns and control actions across the department of Antioquia,” said Colonel Salomón Bello of the National Police’s Metropolitan Command of the Aburrá Valley.
The initiative will continue in other regions, including Norte de Santander, Atlántico and Valle del Cauca, as part of Coljuegos’ campaign to expand legal gaming frameworks and reduce regulatory blind spots.
