Colombia’s Inspector General steps up lottery scrutiny
Key Points
- The initiative follows public scrutiny after a lottery executive’s partner won a multimillion prize
- Coljuegos and local lotteries must provide details on their internal control mechanisms
- A special investigation team was assembled to address the Antioquia case
Colombia’s Inspector General has launched a new initiative aimed at increasing oversight of the country’s lottery operators, according to an official statement.
The Procuraduría General de la Nación (PGN), or the national Inspector General, announced it would carry out preventive actions to verify the effectiveness of audit systems in the country’s lottery sector. The move is designed to strengthen institutional controls and prevent potential corruption in the execution of public prize draws.
Coljuegos, the national regulator, and all departmental lotteries are now required to submit information regarding their internal control, supervision and auditing procedures, particularly those related to lottery draws.
According to the PGN, the goal is to ensure all entities comply with principles of legality, impartiality and accountability, while operating under transparency protocols that reinforce public trust.
This new initiative follows increased public scrutiny after a recent scandal involving the Lotería de Antioquia. A multimillion prize was awarded to the partner of a senior executive, prompting allegations of misconduct. Though preliminary findings indicated the win was purely by chance, the PGN has formed a special investigation group to ensure due diligence.

The authority stated, “Effective control systems are critical to anticipate risks that may affect administrative morality or compromise public assets.” Further findings from the investigation are expected in the coming weeks.
The oversight campaign will be led by the PGN’s Second Delegate for Public Function Monitoring.
