Pennsylvania professors provide responsible gambling education course

Material will include risks of compulsive gambling and sports betting awareness.
Key Points
- The material will be taught by a statistician and a neuroscience professor
- Growing student interest in the topic has resulted in a full class and a waiting list to take the course
Two professors in Pennsylvania have teamed up to bring responsible gambling education to students, according to a GoErie.com local news report.
Carnegie Mellion professor and statistician Ron Yurko and neuroscience professor Linda Moya will bring a sports betting awareness and safety course to undergraduate students.
The duo will focus on sharing statics “that underpin sports wagering,” along with the “dynamics of decision making” when it comes to sports betting choices. Yurko said his goal for students is “to educate them about the odds stacked against them and the risks of compulsive gambling.”
According to Yurko, this will be a unique course, one not typically offered in universities around the area.
Yurko will teach the statics portion of the course, while Moya will focus on sports betting decision-making strategies.
Moya said in a recent interview with USA Today, Network “The goal is that by the end of the course, students will know generally how the healthy brain makes decisions and how the addicted brain can lead to making bad decisions.”
As of late, the course is already full and has a wait list, according to the local report.
