Montana sports betting generates $3.9m June handle

The state of Montana has released its June sports betting results.

Throughout the month, the state handle has reached more than $3.9m. The state posted a gross gaming revenue (GGR) of more than $1m.

Players statewide in June walked away with more than $2.9m in winnings.

Baseball was the sport of choice for players last month, with the sports generating more than half of the state’s total handle in June. Players in June wagered more than $2.1 on baseball.

Basketball grabbed the second-place spot for largest wagers placed. More than $0.9m in bets were placed on basketball last month.

MMA, soccer and ice hockey also claimed higher numbers of wagers throughout the month.

The state launched its legal sports wagering market in 2020. Since its debut, sports betting in Montana has generated a more than $276m handle.

Players have won $240.2m in the past five years. The state has posted more than $36m in GGR  since the market’s opening.

To date, 38 states, as well as the District of Columbia have legalized sports wagering since the US Supreme Court lifted the federal ban on the practice in May 2018.

Mobile sports betting is currently legal in 30 states. Along with the District of Columbia, 38 states have legal and regulated retail sports wagering markets in place. 

Not all states agree there is a clear distinction between sweepstakes and gambling. The state of Montana, however, had banned sweepstakes casinos.
