Key Points
- LOTBA’s campaign promotes dialogue to prevent underage gambling and raise awareness of its risks
- Over 1,600 illegal gambling sites were blocked in schools and public networks; 2,395 websites and 2,024 social media profiles were taken down
- 81 influencers received formal notices for promoting unauthorized gambling
The Buenos Aires City Lottery (LOTBA) has launched a campaign aiming to acknowledge the risks online gambling poses to minors.
Under the motto “To speak is to win,” the initiative promotes dialogue and awareness as fundamental tools for prevention, from a comprehensive and interdisciplinary perspective.
Jesús Acevedo, President of LOTBA, said: “Minors are especially vulnerable to gambling addiction, as they are more impressionable and easier to manipulate.
“When a minor places a bet, it is through illegal sites that do not meet safety standards and use algorithms to detect their preferences, emotions and weaknesses, developing sophisticated strategies to attract them and foster addiction. That is why we believe the best way to prevent this is by talking with our children.”
Under slogans such as “Bet on Dialogue” and “Gambling is for Adults,” the campaign aims to foster conversations within families and schools while discouraging minors from accessing illegal platforms. According to Acevedo, many of them are intentionally designed to capture their attention and encourage compulsive gambling behavior.
As part of the actions taken by the City of Buenos Aires, access to more than 1,600 illegal gambling websites in schools across the City and on the BA WIFI network have been blocked.
Good to know: Influencers promoting illegal betting sites have become a growing issue in Latin America, as seen in the recent arrest of Emily Souza
In addition, action has been taken against 2,395 websites and 2,024 social media profiles and advertisements promoting illegal betting, and over 340 workshops have been held in schools and clubs, with participation from more than 15,000 young people.
Finally, 81 formal notices were sent to influencers who promoted unauthorized gambling sites, and 100 cases are currently under investigation by the Specialized Gambling Prosecution Unit.
