Mar del Plata, Argentina, approves measures to limit youth online gambling

– Mar del Plata has restricted access to betting sites on public school Wi-Fi networks through a motion
– It also seeks to promote family awareness about online gambling risks
– Targets rising online gambling addiction among youth
The city of Mar del Plata, Argentina, has unanimously approved a motion to stop the rise of online gambling addiction among young people.
The initiative, which was promoted by councilor Juan Manuel Cheppi and had received favorable recommendations from the Education Committee, seeks to restrict access to betting platforms through the use of Wi-Fi networks in municipal schools and to encourage awareness among families.
In addition to limiting access to betting sites from educational establishments, the motion aims to reopen the debate on youth gambling addiction, the impact of sports betting on mental health, and the idea that presents gambling as a quick route to wealth.
With the approval of the project, Mar del Plata positions itself among the first cities in the country to legislate specifically on the relationship between online gambling and youth.
During the debate, Cheppi stated: “Many influencers and media show it as easy money, quick cash, something that can solve economic problems overnight. This way of showing gambling causes very serious problems among young people.”
Alongside the legislative discussion, Cheppi held meetings with authorities from the Regional Board of Catholic Education (JUREC) to extend the initiative to private schools.
After the meeting, he said: “Faced with governments that impose austerity measures without considering the consequences, today more than ever we need spaces to think and work together as a community. There are no serious projects addressing this issue from the local government. To make them a reality, working with social institutions like the Church is essential.”
