Ohio Gambling Telehealth Network raises problem gambling awareness for March Madness

Hotline prepares to receive additional calls.
Key Points
- March 1 marks the start of Problem Gambling Awareness Month
- The AGA estimates that bets during March Madness could exceed $3bn this year
The Ohio Gambling Telehealth Network has prepared to assist players in the Buckeye State who might be facing struggles with problem gambling.
The organization said it is gearing up to provide aid ahead of this year’s NCAA Basketball Tournament and in preparation for Problem Gambling Awareness Month, which begins on March 1.
According to the American Gaming Association, March Madness betting could reach $3bn across the country. The AGA said legal betting during this time “is twice as much as the Super Bowl.”
Problem Gambling Network of Ohio Executive Director Derek Longmeier commented, “March Madness can be a perfect storm for those who don’t set limits and stick to them. There are multiple games and live betting options available on multiple betting sites all happening at once. It’s easy for fun to spiral into crisis.”
According to Longmeier, one in five adults in Ohio are “at risk” for problem gambling, representing 1.8 million people in the Buckeye State.
“Those who think they have a problem are starting to ask for help more quickly,” Longmeier added. “If you or a loved one are experiencing gambling-related harm, help is only a phone call away. It’s never too soon to reach out.”
The state of Ohio’s problem gambling hotline has a “warm transfer line,” which allows those who reach out to gain access to group therapy, individual counseling, self-help groups and financial management support.
