New Orleans basketball players under investigation for sports gambling violations

James White, Jah Short, Dae Dae Hunter and Jamond Vincent have not been active since the New Orleans Privateers’ loss to Incarnate Word on January 27.
Key Points
- A source familiar with the situation spoke to local reporters under anonymity, as the reason for suspension had not been made public until February 26
- The investigation comes days after Fresno State recently suspended two of its basketball athletes and removed a third entirely for gambling-related violations
Four college basketball athletes playing for the New Orleans Privateers program are now under investigation for possible sports gambling-related NCAA violations.
A source familiar with the situation, who only spoke to local reporters on condition of anonymity, confirmed that James White, Jah Short, Dae Dae Hunter and Jamond Vincent will continue to serve their suspension after not playing since a January 27 loss to Incarnate Word.
White had been the team’s leading scorer prior to facing suspension, averaging 19.2 points per game as a fourth-year senior. New Orleans has lost eight consecutive games since the four players were suspended, and currently sit with a record of 4-25 prior to its next matchup on February 29.
Good to know: Researchers from the UCSD Qualcomm Institute and School of Medicine led a new sports betting study on February 18, finding that there has been “a dramatic increase” in sports wagering and gambling addiction since PASPA was overturned
The investigation follows Fresno State and the NCAA launching its own inquiry into the men’s basketball team on February 24 because of potential ties to sports gambling. The university released a statement that Jalen Weaver and Zaon Collins “were being withheld from competition as the university reviews an eligibility matter.”
Mykell Robinson, who had been averaging 10.3 points per game for the Bulldogs, is also under investigation. The last game he was active for took place on January 11, but it’s already been confirmed Robinson is no longer with the team.
