Fresno State launches sports betting investigation

Key Points
- A tip prompted the university to investigate
- Sources confirmed to ESPN that the inquiry is due to potential sports wagering ties
Fresno State and the NCAA have launched an investigation into the men’s basketball team because of “potential ties to sports gambling,” according to a recent ESPN new report.
A source told the network that the internal investigation was the result of a tip, prompting further inquiry and the NCAA’s involvement. So far, two players have been suspended, and one player has been removed from the team.
The university released a statement that Jalen Weaver and Zaon Collins “were being withheld from competition as the university reviews an eligibility matter.”
These players were among the team’s high scoring members, averaging nearly 12 points a game each, according to the ESPN report.
Mykell Robinson, who averaged 10.3 points, is also under investigation. Robinson’s last game was January 11, and he is no longer a part of the team, the local report said.
In related news, sources recently told ESPN that the gambling ring connected to the ongoing federal illegal sports wagering investigation within the NBA is linked to “unusual wagering activity” during college basketball games as well.
According to the ESPN report, sources said that “accounts connected to the gambling ring bet against North Carolina A&T, Mississippi Valley State and Eastern Michigan in games this season.”
A federal investigation into suspicious betting activities within the NBA is still underway. Six people have been arrested for their alleged connection to a sports betting scandal involving former NBA player Jontay Porter.
Prior to his dismissal from the NBA, Porter played center for the Toronto Raptors. The NBA began looking into prop bet abnormalities surrounding the player last spring.
