Mississippi reports $42.5m January sports betting handle

The Mississippi Gaming Commission has released its sports wagering results for the month of January.
The state’s sports betting handle reached $42.5m last month, down by close to $12m when compared to results posted in December.
Coastal region players placed the largest total wagers in contribution to last month’s overall state handle. The Central region grabbed the second-place spot last month.
In a breakdown of the state’s total sports betting handle from last month, those living in the Coastal region bet nearly $29.3m, while players in the Central and Northern regions wagered $8m and $5.2m respectively.
Players in the Northern Mississippi region placed more bets on sports parlay cards than in any other category last month, with total wagers reaching nearly $1.9m.
Parlay was the bet of choice for the state’s central region as well. Players in Central Mississippi bet almost $4m on parlay cards and $2m on football last month.
However, Coastal region players wagered the largest amount on football during the month, nearly half of the total handle. Football bets throughout the Coastal region reached almost $15.7m in January, while bettors wagered close to $3.3m on sports parlay cards.
The state reported that it generated nearly $5m in taxable revenue during the month of January. During December, Mississippi lost close to $1m in taxable revenue.

In other state news, the Mississippi House recently passed legislation in favor of legal mobile sports betting, according to a Mississippi Today local news report.
This is the second consecutive year the House has approved legal mobile sports wagering legislation. The House passed the current proposal, a new version of the Mississippi Mobile Sports Wagering Act, by a vote of 88-10 after it was approved by the House Gaming Committee.
