The group said that education has helped to change behaviors.
Key Points
- The NCAA wants to continue educating younger place to help them develop responsible gaming habits
- Betting trends have not changed much since the federal sports betting ban was lifted
The NCAA has released a new study examining gambling behaviors of more than 20,000 student-athletes. The association found in its research that education is showing promise in changing sports wagering behaviors.
This is the latest in a series of studies the organization has conducted since 2004. However, the NCAA has not complied data on the topic since the US Supreme Court overturned the federal ban on sports betting in 2018.
NCAA President Charlie Baker commented, “We need to continue to focus on education and additional harm prevention techniques in this space. Most young people are exposed to gambling while they’re in high school, and by the time they graduate college, some develop an unhealthy relationship with betting.
“We are focused on supporting student-athletes and providing them with resources to combat these behaviors.”
Though laws have changed on a federal level and in more than 38 states around the country, the NCAA reported that “similar percentages of NCAA student-athletes reported betting on sports for money in 2016 and 2024.”
In a breakdown of the newest study, 22% of NCAA men said they placed a bet on sports at least once in the past 12 months. The percentage of NCAA women reached 5%, according to the 2024 data.
The NCAA said in its findings, “Both men and women view gambling as a social activity, with 85% of men and 95% of women saying they are most likely to gamble with family, a romantic partner, teammates or friends outside of sports.”
NCAA Chief Medical Officer Dr. Deena Casiero took a moment to explain why encouraging responsible gaming is a must for the organization.
Casiero said, “It remains essential that we continue to embrace and implement harm reduction strategies that lower risk and foster prevention of problem gambling.
“We remain committed to research-backed methods of promoting healthy behaviors to support our student-athletes and to reduce the stigma associated with problem gambling.”
