Caesars reveals $435m transformation of former Harrah’s property in New Orleans

The new Caesars Hotel and Casino was unveiled just four months prior to Super Bowl LIX being hosted in the city.
Key Points
- Upgrades included enhancing the 115,000 sq ft gaming space as well as the addition of a World Series of Poker room and new Caesars sportsbook area
- Renovations began before the Covid-19 pandemic, which increased costs by more than $100m due to delays and post-pandemic inflation
Caesars Entertainment has announced that its $435m transformation of a former Harrah’s property on Canal Street in New Orleans, Louisiana has finally been completed. The news comes just four months prior to when the city will host Super Bowl LIX, as well as numerous college football games this winter.
While construction began before the Covid-19 pandemic broke out, costs still rose by more than $100m due to post-pandemic inflation and obvious delays.
“We’re incredibly proud to officially introduce Caesars to New Orleans,” Caesars President and COO Anthony Carano said.
“It’s a world-class resort in the heart of the Big Easy and we can’t wait for our guests to experience it.”
The renovation has included rolling upgrades to the 115,000 sq ft gaming area, including a World Series of Poker room and a new Caesars sportsbook space, which features a 147-ft wall of television screens.
While the move should help Caesars create a strong presence in the city before one of the biggest sporting events in the world takes place, New Orleans has seen a number of upgrades made in the last few years.
The projects include the $530m Four Seasons Hotel and Condominiums, completed in 2021, and the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, which has undergone a $570m upgrade and broken ground on the $1bn River District. The River District is expected to include entertainment venues, residential units, office towers and retail areas.

“This year marks 25 years since we opened in New Orleans and the completion of this project is the perfect way to usher in a new era with Caesars,” Caesars New Orleans SVP and GM Samir Mowad said.
“Synonymous with the Caesars name, our new resort is pure elegance and we’re excited to introduce a luxury brand like this to New Orleans. We are extremely grateful for the support of the community, our Team Members and our guests as we come to the finish line of this tremendous transformation.”
Under different ownership than those who originally opened the Harrah’s property in the 1990s, Caesars reached a deal to extend its exclusive license for 30 years starting in 2024.
The terms include paying the city and state an estimated additional $130m over that period, as well as increasing direct jobs by 500 to at least 2,400.
