Mississippi posts $22.6m August sports betting handle
The state has experienced a boost in activity since the summer months.
The Mississippi Gaming Commission has released its sports wagering monthly report for the month of August.
Last month, the state reported a rise in activity after several months of decline in overall handle.
Mississippi posted a $22.6m sports betting handle during August, almost double what the state had reported during July.
However, Mississippi’s sports betting handle only reflected a slight rise when compared to results from last year.
Players in the Coastal region contributed the largest amount of wagers to the overall state handle in August. The Central region grabbed the second-place spot for the month.
In a breakdown of the state’s total sports betting handle, Coastal region players wagered $13.7m, while those living in the Central and Northern regions bet $5.3m and $3.6m respectively.
During the month of August, Northern Mississippi players bet more on baseball than in any other category, with the total in wagers reaching nearly $1.4m.
Coastal region players wagered the most on baseball and football last month. Wagers on baseball throughout the region totaled almost $4.8m, while bettors wagered nearly $3.6m on football.
Players in Central Mississippi bet almost $1.7m on baseball and $2.5m on parlay during the month of August.
Statewide retail sports betting generated close to $3.2m in taxable revenue last month.
Retail sports betting has been legal in Mississippi for several years. However, legislative negotiators were not able to advance a final mobile sports betting proposal, which means online sports betting will continue to remain illegal throughout the state.
Earlier in the state’s most recent legislative session, both the Senate and the House passed versions of the state’s Mobile Sports Wagering Act. But concerns surrounding the fate of Mississippi’s brick-and-mortar casinos kept the bill from further advancement.
