DC August sports betting handle climbs to $40.6m
This is the largest district sports wagering handle to date.
The District of Columbia has released its August sports betting results. The Office of Lottery and Gaming (OLG) posted total handle of nearly $40.6m for the month.
This is the largest monthly handle to date for Washington DC. Players throughout the district placed nearly $21.7m in wagers through FanDuel, which held the top spot for the month.
However, newcomers to the scene, which include DraftKings, BetMGM and Caesars, celebrated a full month of operation in DC during August.
DraftKings and Caesars grabbed the second and third-place spots, bringing handle of $7.4m and $5.4m respectively. BetMGM held close behind with a $5.2m August handle.
Up until mid-July, players could only access mobile sports betting through FanDuel. The operator is a current partner with the DC Lottery.
Gross gaming revenue last month reached $4.5m.
DC players last month and walked away with a large chunk of winnings as well. They took home close to $35m in total wins during August.
Since the federal government lifted its ban on legal sports betting, following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 (PASPA) six years ago, more than 35 states have established legal and regulated sports betting markets.
The District of Columbia has allowed legal sports betting since 2020. The city council recently approved a budget to make room for additional operators to come to DC.
Multi-national lottery operator Allywn recently collaborated with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington DC to showcase an exhibit called “Dvořák Dreams.”
The exhibit was commissioned by the 0xCollection and features a digital installation created by renowned artist Refik Anadol.
Art lovers can check out the exhibit on the Reach Plaza at no cost from now until September 24.
