North Carolina sports wagering handle reaches $370.4m during August

The North Carolina State Lottery Commission has published its sports statewide wagering results for the month of August. Players placed more than $370.4m in wagers throughout the month.
The state’s monthly handle rose by close to $30m when compared to results from July.
This spring, North Carolina joined the ranks of more than 35 US states that allow legal sports wagering within their borders. Sports betting statewide made its debut in March.
North Carolina players took home $333.7m in winnings during August.
Promo wagering revenue last month totaled almost $13.2m. The state posted a total of $33.7m in gross wagering revenue during August.
Sports betting last month contributed close to $6.1m in taxes to the state.
Prior to the launch, the North Carolina State Lottery Commission issued sports wagering operators licenses to eight operators.
Its latest recipient was Tribal Casino Gaming Enterprise, which is an enterprise of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.
Other approved licensees include FanDuel Sportsbook, BetMGM, DraftKings, Fanatic Sportsbook, bet365, ESPN Bet and Underdog Sports Wagering.
The commission said in an online statement regarding the recent approvals, “Two additional provisional supplier licenses were also issued.
“As of Feb. 29, the Commission has issued three full licenses for sports wagering supplier, 20 provisional supplier licenses and three sports wagering service provider licenses.”
Under the current regulations, the Lottery Commission is allowed to award up to 12 interactive sports wagering operator licenses statewide once the market is established. Players would then have access to online and mobile betting, as well as in-person wagering.
The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services’ (NCDHHS) Problem Gambling Program, along with ECU’s Gambling Research and Policy Initiative (GRPI) and Birches Health recently teamed up to offer gambling disorder resources and treatment options to state players.
