River Cree celebrates breaking ground on $200m expansion project

This will nearly double the size of the current facility.
River Cree Resort and Casino in the Canadian province of Alberta has broken ground on an expansion project that will see the destination nearly double in size, according to CTV News Edmonton local report.
Part of the updates will include adding a 240-room hotel, a new swimming pool and close to 40,000 square feet of event space to the Edmonton entertainment location.
River Cree is looking at a $200m price tag for the expansion. The casino first welcomed guests in 2006 and opened as a partnership.
After buying out Paragon Gaming 10 years ago and Marriott Hotels in 2018, the property is now fully owned by the Enoch Cree Nation.
Chief Cody Thomas shared the Nation’s excitement for the current project with local news by saying, “(It) means a lot to our Nation, as there’s an opportunity for us to build capacity in our next generations to come, but to (also) provide sustainable resources for our nation as well.”
The Enoch Cree Nation went on to add that the renovations will be paid for by funds generated from the casino.
In other national news, the Greo Evidence Insights (Greo) and the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction (CCSA) recently released a report titled, “Gambling Availability and Advertising in Canada: A Call to Action.”
This report examined the impact legal gambling has had throughout the country and was published “in response to the significant increase in gambling advertising on billboards, social media, at commercial breaks during sports broadcasts and during sporting events.”
It also proposed a national strategy that would manage conflicts of interest among stakeholders, address inadequate funding for gambling harm prevention and research, monitor systematic changes in gambling-related harm, develop standards nationwide and increase public awareness of gambling-related harm.
