President Joe Biden has nominated Patrice Kunesh for the position of National Indian Gaming Commission Chairman, according to an official White House release.
Kunesh currently serves in several roles, including as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Native American Affairs and the Commissioner of the Administration for Native Americans in the Administration for Children and Families at the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
She is a descendant of the Standing Rock Lakota Nation and holds multiple degrees, including a J.D. from the University of Colorado School of Law and an MPA from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.
Kunesh began her legal career by working at the Native American Rights Fund. She also worked for the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation as in-house Counsel. Early in her career, she also served on the faculty at the University of South Dakota School of Law.
Prior to joining the HHS, Kunesh held appointments with the US Department of Agriculture, the US Department of the Interior and with the US Treasury Community Development Advisory Board.
In other national news, Southern California bookmaker Matthew Bowyer recently pleaded guilty in a federal Santa Ana court to charges of running an illegal gaming business.
The 49-year-old bookmaker also admitted to subscribing to a false tax return and money laundering.
US authorities revealed that Bowyer accepted thousands of wagers from nearly 700 clients, including Ippei Mizuhara, an ex-interpreter for baseball star Shohei Ohtani. The prosecution stated that Bowyer “ran an illegal gambling business for at least five years in Southern California and Las Vegas.”
He is scheduled to be sentenced on February 7.
