Mississippi retail sports betting handle reaches $27m for May
The state experienced another decline in monthly activity.
The Mississippi Gaming Commission has published its sports betting numbers from the month of May. The state generated a handle of nearly $27m during the month, dropping by more than 15% when compared to results from April.
Northern Mississippi players bet more on sports parlay cards than they did on any other sport during the month of May.
Bettors in Northern Mississippi placed nearly $1m in wagers on parlay throughout the month. Basketball and baseball took the second and third spots for the highest number of bets, with basketball accounting for nearly $0.7m in total bets and baseball chipping in another $0.5m.
Coastal region players wagered the most on baseball and basketball last month. Both sports generated more than $5m apiece in bets during May. However, baseball managed to slightly pull ahead of the total of basketball wagers placed in the Coastal region.
Players in Central Mississippi bet $2.1m on basketball and $2.6m on parlay during May.
Coastal players once again contributed the largest amount of wagers to the overall state monthly handle, placing nearly $18.4m in May bets.
May statewide retail sports betting generated close to $2.1m in taxable revenue.
Retail sports betting has been legal in the state for several years.
However, legislative negotiators were not able to advance a final mobile sports betting proposal, which means online sports betting will continue to remain illegal in Mississippi.
Earlier in the state’s most recent legislative session, both the Senate and the House passed versions of the state’s Mobile Sports Wagering Act. However, concerns surrounding the fate of Mississippi’s brick-and-mortar casinos kept the bill from advancing any further.
