Pennsylvania reports total gaming revenue of $504.7m in April
Sports wagering and iGaming revenue continues to rise in the state, but slots and retail games see decreases year-over-year.
The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) has released the April financial results for all forms of gambling within the state. Total revenue for all forms, including fantasy contests, reached $504.7m in the month of April, a 5.87% rise from what was reported in April of 2023. Sources of gaming revenue regulated by the PGCB include slot machines, table games, internet gaming, sports wagering, fantasy contests and video gaming terminals.
Breaking down each game type individually foreshadows where the state is finding growth in revenue totals, but also where certain sectors may be faltering as gaming continues to expand its online presence.
Slot machine revenues decreased 3.35% from the April 2023 total of just over $213m, with only six of the 17 casinos included in the report having seen increases in revenue percentage. Harrah’s Philadelphia represented the largest percentage decrease, reporting the figure at 13.01% while Mount Airy Casino Resort also saw a double-digit fall in revenue percentage at 11.96%.
Only seven of the casinos reported positive increases in retail table games revenue as well, with the total revenue figure of $78.5m netting a nearly 7% decrease from the April 2023 total. Multiple casinos saw decreases of over 20% in revenue, including Parx Shippensburg at 33.35%, Rivers Casino Pittsburgh decreasing by 28.21% and Hollywood Casino York at 27.82%.
However, iGaming and sports betting continues to rise in the state, as both saw significant increases for each respective revenue total. iGaming revenue was reported to be $173.43m, a 26.4% increase from the total reported in April 2023. iSlots revenue carried the way for iGaming in the state, as its revenue figure was over $126m in the month of April alone. Currently only four of the 11 casinos counted for iGaming offer a form of iPoker for residents of Pennsylvania.
Sports wagering revenue increased by 14.5%, having been reported at just over $42.4m in taxable revenue, with Pennsylvania’s total betting handle having been over $646m for the month of April. Online sports wagering heavily outproduced its retail equivalent, with online revenue being reported at nearly $41m as compared to the $1.45m generated by retail.
Total tax revenue generated collectively through all forms of gaming and fantasy contests was $209.9m during April 2024.
