Massachusetts casino shutdown extended to May 18

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission voted to extend the COVID-19 shutdown of casinos until May 18.
The shutdown affects MGM Springfield, Encore Boston Harbor and Plainridge Park.
The commission had previously voted to keep casinos closed until May 4.
In an earnings call Thursday, MGM acting CEO Bill Hornbuckle anticipated extended shutdowns of the company’s domestic casinos.
Hornubckle said: “Due to various public health conditions in these states, we’re preparing to open properties in phases.
“In the U.S., certain states such as Mississippi will likely open sooner than more heavily impacted states, and we anticipate that regional drive markets obviously will rebound faster than fly in destinations.”
Massachusetts has been one of the hardest hit states during the coronavirus pandemic, with more that 62,000 confirmed cases as of May 1.
