Groundbreaking for Queen of Terre Haute Casino Resort set for June 21
Vigo County Commissioner, Chris Switzer, first believed the ceremony would need to be pushed to July.
The Churchill Downs’ Queen of Terre Haute Casino is set for its groundbreaking ceremony on June 21 at 11:00 AM. The 50-acre resort in Indiana is set to include 1,000 slot machines and 50 gaming tables.
Along with the slot machines and gaming tables, the resort will feature a 10-story, 125-room luxury hotel, along with a sportsbook, restaurants and bars with a rooftop pool.
The site is located at 4442 East Margaret Drive. Vigo County Commissioner, Chris Switzer, originally thought that the groundbreaking would need to be pushed back.
Switzer said: “We’ve been trying to set something up for a month or two. We thought we’d have to move it to July, but then we arrived at the June 21 date.”
Switzer went on to say how exciting the day will be, stating: “It’ll be a great day. People from all over western Indiana should be there.”
It was announced back in November of 2021 that the Indiana Gaming Commission would grant Vigo County’s casino license to CDITH LLC (Churchill Downs). At first, Churchill Downs expected to build its casino west of the Haute City Center mall off of U.S. 41. However, in March of 2021, the company announced plans to move it to the east side of the city.
The rezoning was approved by the Terre Haute City Council in March. Around the same time, the Terre Haute Board of Zoning Appeals greenlit a 25-foot zoning variance allowing CDI to build a 150-foot tall hotel near the airport.
Ryan Jordan, Senior Vice President of Real Estate Development for Churchill Downs Inc., said: “The height, given the location, was our effort to make it visible and attractive to people riding down the expressway [Interstate 70].”
Churchill Downs is expected to invest $260m to build the casino, which creates 1,000 local construction jobs.
