Wynn Resorts to temporarily close Las Vegas properties

Wynn Resorts will temporarily close Wynn Las Vegas and Encore as part of its response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The hotels will close Tuesday at 6pm and remain shut for at least two weeks.

This past weekend, Wynn became the first Nevada casino to close its sportsbooks.

The company previously suspended operations at its Encore Boston Harbor property.

Wynn Resorts CEO Matt Maddox told full-time employees they will continue to receive pay amid closures.

In a video sent to employees, Maddox said: “Each day the news is moving so fast and things are changing, but what I can tell you is based on what we’re seeing, our business volumes are going to be basically empty over the next few weeks.”

Wynn Resorts' stock dropped more than 17% on Monday following news of the property closures.

Before deciding to temporarily close its hotels, Wynn had implemented an aggressive response to the coronavirus outbreak by using thermal cameras to screen guests for fevers at entrances.

Maddox said: “We don’t know where this is going to end, but we do know it will. This will end, and hopefully in a very short period of time, but we don’t know that.”
