Michigan’s FireKeepers Casino approved for iGaming, sports betting

FireKeepers Casino has received approval from the Michigan Gaming Control Board to launch iGaming and online sports betting with platform provider NYX Digital.

The casino, located in Battle Creek, is owned and operated by the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of Potawatomi Indians. The tribe and NYX Digital developed a self-branded platform, which went live at noon Monday July 12.

FireKeepers is the 13th Michigan operator approved for both online gaming and sports betting. Michigan launched iGaming and online sports betting at the beginning of 2021.

“We welcome the addition of FireKeepers Casino and partner NYX Digital to Michigan’s growing online gaming and sports wagering market,” said Henry Williams, MGCB executive director. “The tribe’s representatives provided key support for development of the laws signed in 2019 that allow federally recognized tribes in Michigan to seek licenses for internet casino gaming and online sports betting. Their participation will generate revenue to support K-12 education, economic development and the Nottawaseppi Huron Band’s tribal community.”

Despite being less than seven months old, Michigan’s sports betting market is already one of the most active in the country.

Michigan became the quickest state to reach $1bn in online sports wagers, accomplishing the feat in just four months. Mobile handle was $238m in May, with nearly 80% of those bets coming from FanDuel, DraftKings and BetMGM.

FireKeepers is poised to break into the online market while at the same time growing its physical casino presence. FireKeepers is conveniently based between Kalamazoo and Lansing.

The casino has more than 2,900 slots, 70 table games and a 26-table poker room.
