Maryland casinos report June revenue of $162m

Maryland’s six casinos generated June revenue of $162m, a 13% increase from the same month in 2019.

Comparisons are used for 2019 because Maryland casinos were mostly closed the same month a year ago.

Though revenue was down slightly from the record $172m won in May, June figures bode well for the state’s recovery. June was the first full month that Maryland casinos were allowed to operate at full capacity since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The state’s Education Trust Fund received $49.1m in contributions last month.

MGM National Harbor led the market with $63.7m in revenue, an increase of 12% from June 2019. Live! Casino & Hotel was close behind with $58.4m, up 19.4% from two years ago.

Horseshoe Casino was the lone property see revenue fall from June 2019; the casino reported $17m in revenue last month, down 9% from the same month two years prior.

Ocean Downs Casino, meanwhile, saw the largest increase, winning $8.8m for a 29% improvement from June 2019. Hollywood Casino took in $7.7m, up 21% from two years ago, while Rocky Gap Casino rounded out the state with $5.8m in revenue for a 12.5% increase.

Maryland regulators are in the process of finalizing the state’s sports betting rules, which they expect to be approved by July 15. There is no official launch date set, but stakeholders are optimistic sports betting will be live by NFL season this fall.

Maryland could see as many as 60 mobile licenses awarded.

PointsBet recently announced it has reached a market access agreement with the Riverboat on the Potomac, one of four off-track betting facilities approved for sports betting.
